Education and experience
Kristen earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota with a triple major in Art History, Anthropology and American Indian Studies in 1992. She received her Masters of Education degree with honors from Montana State University-Billings in 2000, with a concentration in Environmental Philosophy and Informal Education. She has worked in the fields of journalism and education since that time.
Kristen has extensive experience producing content for a variety of media formats, including radio, television, print and online. Her primary specialty area is environment, but she also specializes in visual arts and the issues and cultures of the indigenous peoples of North America.
Conflict Resolution
In 2013, Kristen decided to embark on a new career path and become a professional in a field she has been fascinated with for quite a few years. After researching the educational opportunities available to her in Montana, she enrolled in the Center for Collaborative Solutions mediation training course. She graduated from the 40-hour training in May of 2014, and is now certified as a mediator through the Montana Mediation Association, having met their thorough requirements for continuing education, training and experience. Her specialization areas include: elder and estate conflicts; property conflicts; tribal and cross-cultural conflicts; workplace conflict; interpersonal conflicts; and conflicts in the arts and entertainment industries.
Her background includes professional work in legal services in the early '90s in Minnesota shortly after graduating from college. During this time she became very familiar with employment and personal injury law. More recently, she gained a great deal of familiarity with Montana's partition statutes (property law) through a family dispute in which she served as point person and liaison with their attorneys.
This conflict, and her enduring interest in human behavior and psychology, underlie her decades-long interest in the field of conflict resolution. She is widely read in the subject, exploring both the popular and academic literature extensively. At this time she is preparing to enter an interdisciplinary doctoral program at Montana State University-Bozeman to study the relationships between conflict, property and identity in the Americas.
Professional background

Kristen is currently the Executive Director of the Billings nonprofit organization MusEco Media and Education Project, and has been in that position since 2003. The organization produces educational content for commercial and public media, including television, radio, print and online projects; and also organizes workshops, seminars and lectures. Kristen has taught as adjunct faculty in the Environmental Studies department at MSU-Billings, has taught a wide variety of informal courses, and lectures regularly on topics in her specialty areas. Kristen is a recent member of the Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau; writes freelance for several local and regional publications; and composes, performs and records original music in Billings with her husband Scott within their acoustic duo Earthshine. Kristen has lifelong roots in Montana. Her great Uncle homesteaded near the Little Snowy mountains in the early 1900's.
In the 1950's, her father, a graduate student at University of Montana, (where her parents met, marrying in 1965) pooled his meager resources with his older sister and together they purchased property near the mountains that later became the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness.
Kristen has spent every summer of her life reveling in the wonders of Montana, married her husband here, and relocated to Montana permanently, along with her parents, soon after she and her husband graduated from college.
